For Boxers — Obtaining a Professional Boxer's Federal Identification Card

Once professional boxing events are resumed and are scheduled to be held, it is anticipated that the Maryland State Athletic Commission will be receiving a higher volume of requests from boxers applying for or renewing their Professional Boxer's Federal Identification Card. Any boxer seeking to apply for or renew his or her Professional Boxer's Federal Identification Card is advised to:

  1. At that point in time, contact the Maryland State Athletic Commission via e-mail or telephone at 410-230-6223 to schedule an appointment to come to the commission office in Baltimore to obtain the card;
  2. Locate, and have on his or her person, his or her state of Maryland driver's license (or state of Maryland identification card) and his or her social security card — documents required to obtain the card; and
  3. Obtain two passport-size color photos of himself or herself which can be purchased at various drug stores.

Per federal boxing law, a boxer must reside in Maryland to receive the Professional Boxer's Federal Identification Card from the Maryland State Athletic Commission. A foreign boxer may also receive the Professional Boxer's Federal Identification Card from the Maryland State Athletic Commission provided that he or she is scheduled to compete in a boxing contest in Maryland.

The Maryland State Athletic Commission does not charge a fee for the Professional Boxer's Federal Identification Card.

The Maryland State Athletic Commission requests that a boxer contact the commission within a reasonable amount of time (preferably two weeks out or more) before the boxer's next scheduled boxing contest. A boxer is not required to have a boxing contest scheduled to obtain the Professional Boxer's Federal Identification Card.
